Case Study: PA Sports' "20 Reasons Why" Campaign

PA Sports is a consortium of the state’s leading sports tourism organizations, with a collective of 14 member destinations representing communities across Pennsylvania. Their core mission is to attract and host sporting events at international, national, regional, and local levels. PA Sports member organizations include regional visitor bureaus, sports commissions, and event and tourism authorities. They operate as support partners for event planners, offering a diverse range of indoor and outdoor venues that prioritize accessibility, affordability, and an overall enjoyable experience for both participants and spectators.

PA Sports leverages its network of member destinations to offer a wide range of capabilities across the state. These regional partners bring a wealth of host venues to the table—everything from the versatile Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg, which offers over one million square feet of event space, to specialized facilities such as the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Butler County or the York Expo Center. Through a coordinated approach, PA Sports promotes Pennsylvania as a premier sports-event destination—fostering economic development, enriching community life, and showcasing the Keystone State as a dynamic place to “visit, live, work, and play”.

A ROBUST BRAND AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

In 2024, PA Sports celebrated their 20th anniversary, and they wanted to celebrate. Partnering with Twothirty Media, they decided to create a social media campaign to celebrate the achievements of PA Sports members, while also increasing awareness in the sports events tourism industry of the types of events hosted in Pennsylvania.

In an effort to reach new potential clients and increase their visibility nationally, PA Sports partnered with Twothirty Media to create a Facebook campaign highlighting “20 reasons why PA is the best place to host a sporting event” to help celebrate the 20 years that PA Sports has been supporting, hosting, and promoting sports events in the Commonwealth.

CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW

The campaign included regularly scheduled Facebook page posts highlighting each of the 20 reasons with graphics and hashtag terms sourced for content and engagement. This content campaign resulted in:

In addition, a paid ad campaign comprised of six ad sets was developed to target users who mirrored the attendees of six tourism industry shows. They were developed with appealing and creative messaging that adjusted dynamically depending on Meta’s targeting data demographics of each user. The ad sets ran for 30 days each, surrounding the time of each event. The industry shows included in this effort were Sports Express, Connect Spring Marketplace, Sports ETA Symposium, and the Esports Travel Summit. The paid ads campaign resulted in:

The increased brand visibility on Meta has had lingering benefits for the PA Sports team members. Bold moves, such as establishing a strong brand presence online and specifically targeting industry networking events, have helped position Pennsylvania as a whole to be one of the leading destinations for sports events in 2026.

How Do You Rebrand Yourself On Instagram?

Instagram is the third most-used social platform in the world. But it is more than just a social platform – it’s a dynamic stage where brands come to life. It's a critical space for businesses to connect with audiences, showcase products, and build a brand story that resonates. However, as markets evolve and consumer interests shift, what once worked might no longer align with your audience's expectations.

This is where rebranding on Instagram becomes essential. It's not merely about refreshing logos or color schemes; it's a strategic move to redefine your brand's narrative, ensuring it speaks directly to the hearts and minds of your evolving customer base. Your brand “voice” is like the personality or feel of the brand, and it can affect the types of customers that will follow or interact with you.

Audit Your Current Brand Presence

The first step is to develop an understanding of your existing brand's strengths and weaknesses on Instagram. This process involves analyzing your current audience, content strategy, engagement rates, and overall aesthetic. It's critical to recognize what aspects of your brand already resonate with your audience, and what areas need improvement. It can be very helpful to see what demographics your current followers share – and how these are shared with your ideal customer profile. Instagram users tend toward the younger demographic, with over 60% being between 18 and 34. Make sure that you keep that younger audience in mind!

Set Clear Rebranding Goals

Define specific, measurable objectives for your rebranding effort. This might include targeting a new audience segment, updating your brand to reflect current trends, or what differentiates you from competitors. Your goals should align with your overall business strategy and be grounded in what you want to achieve through your Instagram presence. It can be helpful to look at what your competitors do on their social media platforms and other brands your current followers also like.

Develop a New Brand Strategy

Once you understand your current position and have set your goals, develop a brand strategy tailored to Instagram. You wouldn’t use the same visuals, message, or brand tone on LinkedIn as you would on Instagram. This includes defining your brand personality, tone of voice, and key messages you want to convey. Your brand strategy should be informed by your business's mission, values, and the unique value you offer to your customers.

Create a Visual Brand Identity

Develop a new visual identity that aligns with your rebranding goals. It does not have to match your logo and brand design guide exactly. It should include visual elements (such as brand colors, logos, and fonts), but it can also play with color palettes and visual elements you might not use anywhere else. A mood board can be a useful tool in this process, helping to visualize and consolidate your brand's new aesthetic on Instagram. When choosing appropriate colors, fonts, and imagery, make sure you choose ones that reflect the personality and messaging you want to emphasize.

Update Your Instagram Profile

Now it’s time to implement your new brand identity on your Instagram profile. This includes updating your profile picture, bio, and the overall look of your feed to reflect your new branding. Ensure that these changes are consistent with your rebranding goals and brand strategy. You don’t need to remove older posts or content, but it is helpful with a rebranding on socials to roll out the change consistently – you don’t want to have competing brands identities on new post content!

Craft and Schedule Your New Content

Develop a content strategy that aligns with your new brand identity. This may involve creating new content pillars, experimenting with different types of posts (such as stories, reels, and grid posts), and scheduling content to maintain a consistent presence on Instagram.

Engage with Your Audience

Instagram has many engagement tools that you might not have been taking advantage of. Use Instagram's interactive features, like stories, polls, and direct messages, to engage with your audience. This engagement is crucial for building a community around your brand and for receiving feedback on your rebranding efforts. Don’t be afraid to share the story behind your rebranding with your audience. This helps in building a narrative around your brand and makes your audience feel more connected to your business's journey.

Monitor Your Strategy

Continuously monitor the performance of your new brand on Instagram. Use Instagram analytics to track engagement, reach, and other key metrics. Be prepared to adapt your strategy based on this feedback and the evolving needs of your audience. Consider using Instagram's advertising platform to reach a broader audience and to highlight key aspects of your rebranding. Paid ads can be a powerful tool to amplify your new brand message and reach potential customers who are not yet following you.
